Whilst lying in bed this morning I saw this honey bee lying on it’s back… so I did the obvious thing, I brought it inside. It was barely alive, so I left it on the window sill to… er… well.. die.. quite sad I know, but it gave me a great insight into how the bee is ‘made’ really facinating stuff. I spent about 2 hours admiring this creature and this is the result.
One things for sure, I will never look at bees in the same way again.

That’s amazing.
What kind of camera did you use?

Thanks Ryan,
I used a Canon IXUS 500 for this particular set, it’s my camera of choice for macro photography. But you don’t get this kind of magnification from an ordinary 500… I put together a lens, which sits nicely on the front of the canon lens, giving me high magnification.
Are you a photographer / photo enthusiast?

Hi Ian,
yeah sure, this is a secret though… keep it to yourself! I use a Bausch and Lomb loupe. # 81-41-13 HASTINGS 10X BAUSCH & LOMB. Can get it from Use Enco. I think it costs about $60. Bloody bargain considering the quality and magnification you get.
Good luck and let me know when you’ve taken some photos with it, so I can see what you’ve done.

Thanks Mez, I will definately order one after christmas. I was thinking about canibalising an old telescope for the lenses, but this looks like a much better solution.
